Melody Pendras is one of two protagonists of season 1, and a minor character in seasons 2 and 3.

Melody first appears in the first season on the tapes in Archive 81 listened to by Daniel Powell, which record her interviews of inhabitants of the Visser Building while she worked for the Historical Preservation Society. In these tapes from the early 1990's, Melody interviews people living in the Visser building regarding strange occurrences in the city, especially the mysterious Historical Society led by Samuel.

Personality[]

Melody is intelligent, assertive, and caring. Bold and determined, but also very personable, Melody is usually great with other people. She does not allow herself be pushed around, and can usually pick up when someone is manipulating her. She is hard working and curious, willing to spend days running her own experiments purely for her own interest.

Melody places great value on the lives and wellbeing of other people, and has little time or care for people who threaten this, becoming brash, cold, and impatient. She cares for other people very easily and motivated to protect them, but only truly lets her guard down around her wife, Alexa.

Unlike many other weird people, Melody's personality seems unaffected by her stranger aspect, and despite her power, exposure to weird stuff even gives her a headache.

Physical Appearance[]

Melody is not described in any detail, though is in her mid-late 20s in season 1. After being transported to The City, with her own piece of Visser, she stops aging. She still looks overwhelmingly, if not completely, human.

History[]

Skills and Abilities[]

  • Social Worker: Melody is a trained social worker and it often shows in her interactions.
  • Sorcerer: In her time living in The City, Melody has become a talented and very powerful sorcerer, and seems to have a range of very useful rituals at her disposal, including wards, protection, communication, and altering perception. Like any powerful sorcerer, Melody has an extensive tape collection.
  • Piece of Visser: The only human shown to have defeated a Leviathan, Melody now owns a fragment of the god's power. The extent of its use is unknown, but she has been shown to be able to use it to transport people from The City back to Earth. It is unclear if she can use powers common to Visser's devotees.
  • Mirror Stone: Melody owns an item called a Mirror Stone, which allows her to check up on happenings on Earth. It is unclear if this is via scrying, or is the power that allows her to pop back to Earth, such as when she interviewed Violet Vos.

Relationships[]

Alexa Pendras[]

Alexa and Melody started dating in August of 1992, and are now married, still very much in love. Alexa is incredibly comfortable around her wife, becoming playful, cheeky, and flirtatious: traits she doesn't show around anyone else. They are both very supportive and protective of each other.

While working on her project at Visser, Melody sometimes gets help calibrating her recording equipment, or tells her a bit about what's going on, and they eat breakfast together, while Melody is still in her pyjamas. They kiss each other goodbye. Alexa worries about Melody's stress and overworking, and when Melody vanishes, sets out researching and checking in with various offices, to find any information about what has happened to her. They eventually begin talking in their dreams, and Melody strikes a bargain with The Messenger, Alexa joining her, despite learning how dangerous it potentially be, goes along without another thought.

Since nobody can stop them, they decide to get married, Alexa taking Melody's surname. They are always looking out for each other, in both big and small ways; Melody is constantly cautious not to expose Alexa to too much weirdness, and Alexa has employed the likes of Static Man to prevent them from being bothered. She's also developed tea to help ease her wife's headaches. After over 20 years together, they still appear to maintain the same, soft, dedicated, and loving dynamic.

Daniel Powell[]

During season 1, Dan becomes familiar with Melody though her work, and Melody to Dan through her use of the mirror stone. Dan quickly becomes impressed with her work, stating that she "knows her shit, or seems to", though neither of them get the chance to talk until the end of season 2. Although she knows it isn't really her fault, and Dan doesn't blame her, Melody feels somewhat responsible for what has happened to Dan. Dan is excited and a little star-struck when he eventually gets to meet Melody, and she is polite and caring towards him, worrying how he might fare back in the real world, and agreeing to help Chris and Nicholas with the express intention of helping Dan out, too. Rat mentions shipping Melody and Dan, and Dan reacts unimpressed to the concept of a relationship with her.

Theories and Speculation[]

  • Melody mentions she grew up in a strange environment that seemed normal from the inside, and Samuel connects her curiosity about Visser and the Visser Historical Society to "[her] particular history... [Her] particular childhood", so it is theorized she may have grown up in a cult.
