Events of Note[]
- Nicholas and Chris ward the doors of their house with Virgin's blood.
- Nicholas and Chris learn a little about how Aleister gets rid of people: trapping them underground.
- Aleister's House is first mentioned.
- The siblings visit Cindy Johannson and gain the next step for the ritual.
Summary[]
The two gather what they need for a protection ritual given by the Payphone. Nicholas was in charge of finding hair to create a brush for their ritual. Christine got a pint of "virgin's blood", though notes it's from a lesbian friend (who she told it was for an art project). Previously a graphic design major, Chris is confident she can draw the symbol with ease.
Christine throws up another tape, which contains a recording of a man named Reginald, who the mercenary Aleister trapped in a cave with no openings. Aleister makes him give up various passcodes, to several accounts, threatening to trap him there otherwise, like the other bodies in the cave. Alister notes he is growing something “beautiful and true”, and, having given what was wanted, Reginald is left to die. Christine and Nicholas take this as a warning of the kind of person Aleister is.
An Amber Duke Cigarettes commercial is played, a parody of old advertisements.
Nicholas and Christine visit an old "friend" of their father's, Cindy Johannson. She welcomes them, explaining it would "be unwise to not help Michael Waters' kids." Cindy deals with repetition, demonstrating a tape loop for the siblings, before introducing a strange machine that reveals messages in humming repetitions. Nicholas and Chris have their hums recorded, overlayed, and played back, Chris using a simple and uncomplicated note, and Nicholas humming a tune his father used to hum for him. The tape loop reveals instructions to order a watch, a marker pen, and a DVD copy of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back on Amazon with 2-day delivery and have it delivered to their location. After the message is done, the whole place begins to rumble & shake, and though Nicholas wants to hear more, he is cut off by Cindy, who demands they leave.
Nicholas and Christine share drinks and discuss their relations to their former father, Nicholas revealing Michael left when he was 5, Chris only spoke briefly to him when he called on her 18th birthday to ask if he could draw blood.
Christine tells Nicholas about the time when she was seventeen at a college party and failed to help a girl who died later that night of alcohol poisoning. She feels guilty and asks him not to tell anyone. Nick notices the recorder has turned on and, saying he has an idea, switches it off.
Nicholas turns the recorder back on in a different location and the two ask some questions to whoever is listening on the other side of it.
